In a recent study of the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin population, 1 569 individual dolphins with distinctive markings were identified, such as deep notches on the edges of their dorsal fins.

Subsequently, the team then collected photo-identification data during 54 expeditions over a 3-yr-study period, estimating the population at a whopping 28,482.

The study concluded that this was the largest population estimate to date for this dolphin species along the South African coast.

The study also suggests that the bottlenose dolphins inhabiting the Algoa Bay region represent part of a substantially larger population, which ranges along a considerable length of the South African coast.

Facts about the Bottle Nose Dolphin

The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, reaches a maximum length of 2.6m and a maximum weight of 230kg. Their colourings are dark grey above and an off white on their belly, which often becomes spotted as they grow older.

Bottlenose dolphins are known for their curiosity, which often draws them close to boats where you regularly see them bow-riding the waves created.

Additionally, the Bottlenose dolphin can dive up to 300 metres and hold their breath for up to 20 minutes. However, they are frequently found in shallow waters of no more than 30m deep and tend to dive for only 3 – 4 minutes at a time.

Generally, they are found in groups of 1 - 400, however, they have been known to join other schools, forming groups of up to 1,500.

In Port Elizabeth, they are regularly sited along the beachfront, with some of their favourite haunts being the shallower waters around the islands we have in the bay.
