Iron Man South Africa 2017
The Iron Man has brought much international interest to Port Elizabeth, with PE offering the best terrain and race conditions in the world to Iron Man competitors.
The race takes place over 17 hours and is the biggest triathlon on African soil.
It combines a 3.8km swim, a 180.2km bike ride and a 42.2km run – and is recognised as a true celebration of human determination and strength.
The swim route begins 2km from our guest house at Hobie Beach. It takes athletes past Humewood Beach (one of our Blue Flag beaches) and onto Kings Beach where they turn at buoy markers and return to Hobie Beach.
The 90km bike route follows and takes athletes on two laps of flat terrain. The route runs along the scenic coast at Marine Drive, where it moves more inland at Seaview. The bike route ends at the transition area on the coast where they begin their run.
The 42.2km run offers runners a flat, fast-paced course, looping along Marine Drive - which brings them back to the start/finish at Hobie Beach.
Port Elizabeth – Showing your support
Race officials and organisers set out weeks in advance, preparing the streets and race route.
Every year hundreds of residents gather to support athletes as they tackle the ultimate test of human endurance and spirit.
Residents gather alongside the route, cheering on athletes offering them encouragement and refreshments.
The encouragement from the crowds is a truly a heart-warming sight to see.
This year is no different and we look forward to showing our support!
